NASA's MESSENGER mission which is the first mission sent to orbit the planet closest to the sun and gather data. Even though the actual orbiting will happen in 2011, the spacecraft has already sent us valuable data.
According to a news article on NASAOn Oct. 6, 2008, at roughly 4:40 a.m. ET, MESSENGER flew by Mercury for the second time this year. During the encounter, the probe snapped hundreds of photos and other data of the cratered surface of Mercury.
